Avast ye pirate shawl

Pirate Costume

Finished my pirate shawl last night. This bright red-to-purple color-shift yarn is the perfect match for my pirate costume. I ordered the custom-dyed yarn from Moonlight Yarns, in a Blue-faced Leicester and silk mix. This was the first time I’ve worked with this particular yarn and I have to say, it’s the softest wool blend I have ever felt considering there’s no cashmere in it.

I decided to use the Aeolian pattern because it’s a favorite, but also because Estonian lace knitting has been around for ages and the style fits with the time-period. Not that I’m all that authentic in my use of pirate accessories, but I do like something that looks like it could be period. The photo on the right is my pirate costume from last year. I’m super-excited to get to use my shawl for this year’s events!

Knitting the Aeolian pattern is easy, in fact it was the first lace project I ever made. I can practically knit it in my sleep, I’ve made so many of them over the past few years. I would say it’s a favorite because it has layers of design worked throughout the whole piece and not just the same repeat pattern over and over. So many patterns don’t build a design, they just replicate. The variety of patterns that work together is what I love best about the Aeolian.
