Deep azure to a light sand, this gradient yarn highlights the detail of A Mermaid’s Tale shawl. Hand knit in an ultra-soft cashmere and merino wool yarn, the scalloped edge and fish-scale design assist in creating this watery fantasy. Be the first to encounter this mermaid as she rests on the sand, singing her tale of the sea.
Comments on the project
This was my first attempt at dying my own gradient yarn. I’m not sure if it was beginner’s luck or fate that this yarn came out perfectly, the first time. I used the knitted blank method that I made with an inexpensive knitting toy, and didn’t have a dyeing kettle, so I heated the dye water in a glass bowl in the microwave. I then set the hot bowl of water in the sink and dipped one end of the yarn blank in the dye mix and kept dipping more and more of the blank in until I got to the end. With just a quick dip at the end, I then rinsed it all out. After that, I cleaned up and made up the darker blue color and did the same thing with the darkest end turquoise. Rinse, repeat with the light brown on the lighter side turquoise. The hardest part was not getting dye all over my white tile counter and grout. If I did more of this I’d definitely want a better space and better equipment to work in.
This Mermaid’s Tale pattern was a breeze to knit. Probably because I’d knit Kitman’s Jaali pattern and so the stitches were familiar. I had to think hard about would I really wear this before deciding to put it in the store. I think it’s absolutely gorgeous, but would be much too warm to wear here in California.
