The Raven’s Nevermore shawl

Nevermore shawl.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven poem, this stunning shawl embodies the soul of this famous black bird. The iridescent gradient colors found in its rich black feathers catch the eye, while jet-black, fire-polished beads mesmerize with their sparkle. Nevermore, will there be another shawl made quite like this one. Nevermore.

This shawl was such a fun project. From Fiona’s concept of creating a Raven’s iridescent feather in the sunlight, to finding just the right pattern and beads, this Nevermore shawl has been an adventure. I started with a hank of Moonlight Yarns electric blue BFL and silk yarn, then custom dyed a gradient to mimic the green-to-blue-to-purple iridescence that happens when sunlight hits the dark feathers. I then took a hank of Knit Picks, Luminance 100% silk yarn and left it in a black dye pot for a few days to turn to a nice, dark black. Took forever to absorb all of the dye, but I was patient.

I’d found the perfect pattern, but it wasn’t available for purchase yet. I messaged Nim Teasdale to ask if I could buy her Illumine pattern early, or possibly help test knit it, and she was nice enough to add me to her list of testers. Once I had the pattern, I ordered fire-polished black jet beads from Fire Mountain, but when they arrived, they were too large. I made a quick run to Michaels to pick up some smaller jet beads that I thought worked well for the spine and decided to use the larger ones for the edging. I was now ready to begin!

The pattern was an absolute dream to knit, and the only modification I made, was to place the beads on the spine of the feathers, and then to add beads to every single K2Tog, SSK on rows 115 to 133. However, I poorly estimated (twice!) how many #6 round beads I would need for the modification, and had to wait days for each of the orders to arrive. I think that was the most difficult part to making this shawl, as I wanted to see the end results. I think it turned out spectacular!
